The Ideal Naked Lettuce Pack:

The near perfect rating should be as described in the following: slightly crown pack, 56 – 58 lbs., the opening appearance should be free from any surface problems, butts and labels aligned in perfect grid lines, at least 4 to 5 wrapper leafs for shipping protection, after the wrapper leaves are cleaned off it should be free from exterior defects, M/M+ head size, FF/F, free from any interior defects, and finally, every leaf is usable to the consumer. Of course the market and shipping location will dictate the needs of the customer, the following scores and evaluations will be based on the ideal pack for naked lettuce. The remarks will describe the buyer’s perfect buy for market conditions.
 

LABEL

This category lists the area where the lettuce is grown, who the grower is, their sales office number, and what label they are shipping under.
LOT The lot number is identified on the boxes by chalk, color tags, or bar code labels indicating the field source of the grower. The inspector will note in the remarks, the time of the inspection, when the same reference number is made by the grower for multiple lots.
 
WEIGHT Scale weights will be used designated by "S" following numbers. If a scale weight cannot be obtained, a range of weight will be indicated. This range will be determined by the inspector using a hand scale, 60 pounds max., on random samples of the lot.
 
SIZE The sizes listed below govern all pack categories.

COLOR This score is based on brightness, depth and uniformity of color at the opening of the carton. Statements regarding the color at retail trim maybe elaborated upon in the remark section.

APPEARANCE

The appearance score reflects the overall presentation of the lettuce, when the box is first opened. Color, alignment, a clean presentation, and any obvious defects will all be taken into consideration when determining this score. (See section 10, "Remarks").
 

PACK The pack score will reflect the performance of the field crew packing the lettuce. We look for a clean box, free of mud, dirt, and chemical residue, uniformity in size, proper trim and placement of the product in the container. Harvesting defects such as mechanical damage, bruising and poorly selected heads (i.e. soft and/or wild) will impact the retail value of this product. All surface defects will be considered when determining this rating. Condition of the product and color will have no bearing on this score.
 
CONDITION The condition score is the present state of the product including conditional defects listed that will change or adversely affect the product during the process of cooling, storage, and shipment of the product. (See section 10, "Remarks").
 
SOLIDITY Solidity describes the compactness of the lettuce.

Abbreviations:
HRD - Hard; The heads are compact and solid.
FRM - Firm; The heads are compact but may yield slightly moderately
FF - Fairly Firm; The heads are not firm but they are not soft or spongy
SFT - Soft; The heads are easily compressed or spongy

The Ideal Leaf Pack: The best rating should be described in the following: fairly full to full pack, not to exceed the weight noted on the carton, the opening appearance should be free from any surface defects, shingle packed with butts in alignment, at least 3 to 4 wrapper leafs for shipping protection, after the wrapper leaves are cleaned-off it should be free from exterior defects, M/M+ in length, approximately 10 - 12", free from any interior defects, and finally, every leaf is usable to the consumer. Of course the market and shipping location will dictate the needs of the customer, the following scores and evaluations will be based on the ideal pack for leaf lettuce. (See Section 10 Remarks). Note the remarks on the final report will describe the buyer's perfect buy for their customers.

The Ideal Broccoli Pack: The best rating for a box of 14's should be described in the following: the box shall be free from any exterior defects, such as dirt or mud, the box shall yield the net weight listed before icing. When opened the broccoli is tightly packed in uniform and consistent rows and filled up to the handle holes of the box, to allow fill ice 3 - 4" above and between the product. The bunches have 2 to 3 stalks per bunch, the stalks are 6 - 7" in length, with crowns approximately 5 - 6" across the tops of the crowns edge, the diameter of the stalks shall be 3/4 - 1 1/4" or a quarter in size, and the bead size should be green, tight, medium in size, and free from any surface or internal defects. (See Section 10 Remarks, under defects characteristic of Broccoli). Note the remarks on the final report will describe the buyer's perfect buy for their customers.

The Ideal Cauliflower Pack: The best rating for 12's should be described in the following: the ideal box of cauliflower at first presentation must be a full pack and free of any shifting of movement of the product. The cauliflower is tightly wrapped with clear cello, with the company's logo or bar codes aligned. The product has a protective leaf jacket trimmed at the edge of the crown to protect the flower during shipping, its color should be white and the surface is hard and free from any defects. The product is shingle packed tightly against other jackets and its ideal weight should be approximately 30-32 pounds per flat. (See Section 10 Remarks, under defects characteristic of Cauliflower). Note the remarks on the final report will describe the buyer's perfect buy for their customers.

The Ideal Celery Pack: The best rating should be described in the following: upon first appearance of the pack, the box should be free of exterior defects i.e. dirt or mud. When opened the celery should be V-packed full to the dimensions of the box, approximate weight before precooling is 60+ pounds, its appearance is a vibrant light green in color, with each bunch full with straight stalks consistent in length and width, and free from any surface defects. The stalks width close to the base, a.k.a. meat, should be medium to medium plus width, all stalks shall be usable, free from pith and internal defects to the heart of the stalk. (See Section 10 Remarks, under defects characteristic of Celery). Note the remarks on the final report will describe the buyer's perfect buy for their customers.

This range will be determined by the inspector using a hand scale, 70 pounds max., on random samples of the lot.
